M Rijki, Sang Penemu Obat Diabetes dari Labu Parang

Yogyakarta - Kandungan labu parang rupanya bisa dimanfaatkan untuk mengobati penyakit diabetes mellitus (DM) tipe 2. Inilah temuan mahasiswa Fakultas Kedokteran Hewan (FKH) Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM), Muhammad Rijki. Penemuannya itu membuat Rijki memperoleh penghargaan Alltech Young Scientist Award.


Labu parang mengandung senyawa saponin dan flavanoid, yang keduanya berkhasiat menurunkan kadar glukosa darah dan memperbaiki sel beta pancreas untuk menghasilkan insulin kembali.


"Bahan-bahan ini terkandung dalam labu parang," ungkap Rijki kepada wartawan seusai acara penyerahan penghargaan di FKH UGM di Yogyakarta, Jumat (8/7/2011).


Berdasarkan hasil penelitiannya ungkap Rijki, kandungan saponin secara signifikan mampu menurunkan glukosa darah. Meski percobaan ini baru dilakukan pada tikus, namun dia melihat hasil yang cukup menggembirakan. "Hasil pengukurannya, semakin tinggi dosis saponin maka akan secara signifikan menurunkan kadar glukosa," katanya.

Rijki mengatakan untuk mengobati penyakit diabetes pada manusia, diperlukan 400-800 gram labu parang yang telah diekstraksi untuk dikonsumsi tiap hari. Namun bila itu terlalu repot, dia menyarankan labu parang dikonsumsi secara langsung dengan cara dihaluskan dengan blender.


"Saponin larut dalam air, jika dimasak, kadar saponin akan berkurang," katanya.


Menurut dia, ide awal menggunakan labu parang ini muncul saat dirinya pulang ke rumahnya di Desa Caringin, Sukabumi, Jawa Barat. Dia melihat banyak petani yang membudidayakan labu parang.


Saat itu, Rijki mencoba menggali informasi tentang khasiat labu melalui internet. Setelah itu, dia melakukan penelitian lebih lanjut dengan menguji di laboratorium. Pemuda itu menggunakan tikus sebagai sebagai kelinci percobaan.


"Hasil penelitian awal ini memang signifikan. Hanya saja di desa saya, sudah tidak banyak petani yang menanam labu parang lagi. Semoga dengan temuan ini produksi labu parang semakin bertambah," sambungnya.


Karena prestasinya itu, Rijki memperoleh medali dan piagam dari PT Alltech Biotechnology Indonesia, yang diserahkan langsung oleh General Manager Drh, Isra Noor. Turut hadir dalam acara penyerahan penghargaan, Wakil Dekan Bidang Kemahasiswaan, Kerjasama dan Alumni FKH UGM drh Setyo Budhi, MP.


GM PT Alltech Biotechnology Indonesia, Isra Noor, mengatakan Rijki merupakan satu-satunya mahasiswa dari jurusan Kedokteran Hewan yang berhasil meraih penghargaan ini. "Tahun ini banyak dari jurusan peternakan dan mahasiswa pascasarjana," kata Isra.

GM Indonesia PT Alltech Biotechnology, Isra Noor, said Rijki was the only student from the Department of Veterinary Medicine who won this award. "This year many of the farms majors and graduate students," said Isra.
