GUNUNG KIDUL, KOMPAS.com — Meski sudah dua kali mengungkap dan menangani kasus people smuggling atau imigran gelap asal Timur Tengah dan Afganistan beberapa waktu lalu, sampai saat ini jajaran Kepolisian Resor Gunung Kidul belum memiliki peralatan yang memadai guna melacak keberadaan perantara imigran ataupun peralatan yang mampu melacak posisi imigran saat di laut.


"Keterbatasan tersebut menjadi kendala tersendiri bagi kami. Dengan adanya bantuan dari Australia Federal Police (AFP) ini, diharapkan dapat difungsikan secara maksimal untuk penanganan kasus people smuggling selanjutnya," kata Kepala Polres Gunung Kidul AKBP Asep Nalaludin, Selasa (3/5/2011).

Lebih lanjut ia mengatakan, pada 17 Oktober 2010 sebanyak 73 imigran gelap asal Afganistan dan Iran ditangkap di Pantai Gesing, Kecamatan Panggang, dalam perjalanan mereka menuju Pulau Christmas, Australia.
